Abstract

Manuel Joaquim Rebelo, a Lisbon trader, wrote in 1795, Economia Política, work on which he approached matters related to the economy functioning, which according to the author, should be understood through a single mainspring principle. Theoretically developed themes like the freedom of economic agents, social division of work, makeup of goods value and the market role within economy and society. His work was only published in 1821, during the Cortes Gerais e Extraordinárias da Nação Portuguesa, moment when the debate on economics emerged in order to set out the multiple disparate realities which constituted then the Luso-Brazilian Empire. Rebelo's publishing, at that time, points that the trader may have influenced the debate on economics in Portugal. This research aims to establish the Manuel Joaquim Rebelo's influences on the Portuguese economic thought between 1795 and 1821, evincing the repercussions, approximations and detachments of the Portuguese trader's ideas on the Luso-Brazilian writings about the theme. It aims, also, to approximate Rebelo's ideas regarding the themes on debate on the Memórias Económicas of the Lisbon Science Academy. Last, it intends to verify the roots of Rebelo's economic thought, the influences of authors like Adam Smith and François Quesnay, as well as the currents of thought linked to the German Cameralism and the Spanish Economic Societies.
