Abstract

Coordination compounds of rare earth ions with organic ligands have been extensively studied, but the commercial use of complexes is often limited by the chemical properties, particularly with regard to thermal stability and lability to the ligand exchange. Organic molecules containing aromatic rings and oxygen atoms are optimal for binding the lanthanide ions and has high absorption of ultraviolet radiation, with subsequent energy transfer to the metal ion, resulting in luminescence in the region of visible and near infrared, responsible for various types of applications in light emitting devices. The subject is to study new polymeric complexes with chemical, structural, magnetic and luminescent properties. It is proposed to use the thianaphthene-2-carboxylic acid (C9H6O2S) and trivalent ions europium, gadolinium and terbium to synthesize mono-and heterobimetallic complexes. The obtained compounds will be characterized by elemental analysis, thermal analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and UV-vis electronic spectroscopy. The optical properties will be studied by photoluminescence and excitation with X-rays, while the magnetic characteristics will be evaluated by a conventional vibrating sample magnotometric.
