Abstract

Branching morphogenesis is an ubiquitous developmental process of several organs not only in vertebrates but also in arthropods. Recent studies indicate the reactivation of such process in pathological conditions, especially in the formation of tumors, particularly those that affect the lungs and prostate. Prostate is an accessory reproductive organ present in mammals, and the study of their formation process is particularly relevant to the research on the correlations between development and tumor formation, since study of this organ enables the investigation on the interaction between endocrine and paracrine signaling, as well as such is prone to a high incidence of benign tumors with senescence. The Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) is promising for this type of research, since the presence of prostate in females is almost ubiquitous, as well as the occurrence of benign tumors in the body is significantly elevated compared with that of other laboratory animals. This project aims to describe the morphological patterns of the branching process of the prostate ventral lobe of Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) compared between males and females, evaluating the organ anatomical arrangement during development and specifically the disposition of estrogen receptor ± (ER±) and androgen receptor (AR) and the possible presence of telocytes along differentiation of stromal compartment, in order to provide a basis for future comparative studies of experimental manipulation and increase the knowledge as a whole about prostatic branching process.
