Abstract

This paper brings new evidence on the influence of non-cognitive elements (e.g. motivation, aspirations, perseverance) on the academic performance of students by building an "Aspirations, Expectations and Attitudes" (AEA) index using previously unobservable covariates. We draw information from a novel dataset on the profile of students from public schools in the brazilian state of São Paulo (C-IDEAS/LEIA-ME/BID de Caracterização Multidemensional do Alunado Paulista) .The results shed light on a recent debate on the economics of education literature about the determinants of academic performance, bringing further information about them and helping policy makers to build more focused and effective interventions.
