Laser acupuncture versus electroacupunture for the postoperative pain management in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy

Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the laser acupuncture to electro acupuncture treatment as an adjuvant for the postoperative control pain in cats. Thirty female cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy will be distributed into three groups of ten cats each: T-Laser: S36 and SP6 bilateral acupoints stimulation with a laser applied during 6 seconds in each acupoint, prior to the anesthetic induction; T-EA: S36 and SP6 bilateral acupoints stimulation with an electrical stimuli during 20 minutes prior to the anesthetic induction. T-Control: none acupuncture techniques will be applied. All cats will be sedated with intramuscular ketamine (5mg kg-1) in combination with midazolam (0.5mg kg-1) and tramadol (2mg kg-1). Fifteen minutes after sedation, the cats of T-Laser and T-EA will be treated with acupuncture. Anesthesia will be induced with propofol (5mg kg-1iv) and maintained with isoflurane. Heart rate, respiratory rate, systolic arterial blood pressure, oxicapnografy, and end tidal isoflurane concentration will be evaluated during the surgery. Postoperative analgesia will be assessed at 30 minutes, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 18 and 24 hours after the tracheal extubation using an Interactive and Dynamics Visual Analog Scale and Variable Count Scale. The sedation degree will be evaluated with score system. Numerical data will be submitted to analysis of variance followed by Tukey's test for parametric measures and Kruskall-Wallis with post-Dunn test for nonparametric measures.
