Abstract

The human T-cell lymphotropic viruses (HTLV-1, HTLV-2, and HIV) share the same routes of virus transmission and diverge in pathogeneses. HTLV-1 is the etiological agent of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-1-associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM), HTLV-2 is not associated with any particular disease, and HIV is responsible for the global pandemic of AIDS. These viruses can infect the same individual and the coinfection can accelerate or retard the development of related diseases. It is known that HIV/HTLV-1 coinfection can either delay the start of antiretroviral therapy (ARV) or accelerate the development of AIDS, while HIV/HTLV-2 coinfection may delay the onset of AIDS. The prevalence rates of HIV/HTLV-1/2 co-infections vary according to geographic region and the study population. The present study aims to determine the prevalence of HIV/HTLV-1 and HIV/HTLV/2 coinfections in patients attended at an AIDS Reference Center of São Paulo (CRT-Aids), and to compare the performance of serological screening tests (enzyme immunoassays - EIA) and confirmatory assays [Western Blot (WB), immunochromatographic assay (INNOLIA) and the real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)] for HTLV-1/2 diagnosis.
