Abstract

The modulatory effect of haloperidol on the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway induces catalepsy, a behavioral state in which the subject is not able to correct externally imposed postures. This cataleptic state is often used in animal models of the motor impairments observed in Parkinson's disease. One of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease is the bradykinesia, which appears to be dependent on the emotional state of the patients, suggesting that patients with Parkinson's disease have the motor system intact but find it difficult to access it without an external stimulus. For example, some immobile patients are able to make quick movements after hearing the cry "fire". A recent study suggests that interference in the neural substrates of the inferior colliculus (IC) - which is a structure primarily involved in the processing of auditory information, but also linked to structures of the motor system and of the brain aversion system - can influence haloperidol-induced catalepsy. Thus, considering that the IC has connections that are related to the motor control of catalepsy, and connections with the brain aversion system, we want to assess whether an aversive emotional state can exert some influence on the catalepsy caused by intraperitoneal administration of haloperidol. For this, catalepsy tests will be performed associated with the exposure of rats to different types of aversive stimulation: exposure of the animals to an open-field test, to footshocks, and finally to psychological stress represented by the contextual conditioned fear test.
