Blast disease, caused by Magnaporthe oryzae (anamorph Pyricularia oryzae), is a disease that affects important crops in Brazil. Besides rice, this disease was already reported in all winter cereals, wheat being the first. Due to severe yield loss on these crops and inefficacy of control measures, this disease is considered a threat to global wheat production and many researches have been carried out in the whole world despite its occurrence being confined to South America. Barley is another crop that has been infected by this pathogen. The little information available on barley blast employed few isolates and is outdated. The knowledge on the influence of other hosts (cereals as well as weeds) and genetic diversity of the population that is causing blast on barley is important from the epidemiology viewpoint and paramount for more efficient methods of control. Therefore, the present work aims to shed light on pathogenic and molecular characteristics of barley blast in Brazil.
