Abstract

For long years, the ancient History of Africa had been influenced by Eurocentric, Evolutionist, and Racist ideas derived from the nineteenth Century. Nevertheless, at least since the 1960's, a new trend of researchers, called sometimes "the African new history", has been arguing against these ancient imperialist assumptions. Following the 60's generation, the present master's proposal argues that the cultural and political re-adaptation was the key for the thriving of the Portuguese settlement in Western Africa and West-Central Africa. In this sense, my assumption is that Santiago and Luanda, two important population centers bored in the African shore, were the connection between two different spaces, the Atlantic World on the one hand, and the African World on the other hand. This connection was the core and the key to the Portuguese occupation of Africa. Thus, as long as Santiago and Luanda maintained this fundamental linkage, a "Luso-African microcosm" would guarantee the presence of the Portuguese interests among the African communities. In sum, Luanda and Santiago brought out to be two important borderlands that sustained the main Portuguese achievement in Africa: be part of the African World. (AU)
