Abstract

Normal physiologic functions require an integration of complex networks of control systems that have an integrated organization, characterized by the interaction of subsystems that interact nonlinearly. The process of aging is associated with reduced ability to interact these subsystems, reducing complexity. On the other hand, the frailty syndrome is highly prevalent with age increasing and is associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes. This syndrome is described as a clinical state of vulnerability to stress, a result of declining resilience and physiological reserves associated with aging. The main objective of this study is to relate the question of the complexity of the dynamics of the cardiovascular system oscillations with fragility. To do this will be collected ECG and BP pulse for 10 minutes in supine position, will be held immediately after the active postural change from supine to standing position, with the volunteer maintaining that position for 10 minutes. Nonlinear methodologies will be used (symbolic analysis, Shannon entropy, conditional entropy) for separate analysis of HR and SBP. The integrated analysis of SBP and HR, will assess by the baroreflex and causality between signals (cross-conditional entropy). As a result it is expected that the study of complexity in frailty syndrome may contribute to enhancing the understanding of this relationship between complexity and fragility in this biological system, in order to contribute hereafter with new types of interventions aiming reversal or stabilization in the frailty process through complexity change.
