Abstract

This project aims at assisting NEV's longitudinal research project in its first year, which will be essentially devoted to the constructing of the empirical field. The main purpose of NEV´s research is to analyze how the legitimacy of key institutions for democracy is constructed, or jeopardized, by exploring the contacts between citizens and civil servants. In other words, we are concerned with how the performance of institutions affects citizen's perceptions of political legitimacy. The research project takes the design of a longitudinal panel study to be carried out with the citizens of São Paulo in a number of different areas. These "Study Areas" will be selected on the basis of the socio-economic profile of the population, how consolidated the urban occupation is, the prevailing type of occupation (residential, mixed, industrial, commerce) and presence or absence of substandard housing. Other characteristics will also count for identifying the "Study Areas": access to rights (health, public security, education, public and private -commercial services, leisure and cultural facilities, infrastructure, parks and so forth), and the social, economic and demographic profile of the population. This specific scientific initiation research will contribute for the definition of the empirical field, in terms of the identification of the "Areas of Study", through gathering information which will serve as a database able to provide elements to investigate and analyze the criminality space-time dynamics, the public security actions and the material and human resources available for the public security services in the "Study Areas", and also in the intra-urban area, municipal and regional. The elements will also be useful to analyze the criminality data from the Public Security State Secretary, mortality data from SEADE Foundation and data on accidents from the SIVVA data base. (AU)
