Abstract

The "Political and Social Order Department" (Departamento de Ordem Política e Social - DOPS) was created in 1924 with the aim of organizing information about the vigilance of suspects concerning the social and political disorder. Under this category would be, above all, the communists, in particular, and the leftists, in general. Although, beyond this more known sphere of "enemies", DOPS booked a wider spectrum of society. Among them were the integralist movement followers - or suspected of following it. These followers were booked mainly during the Estado Novo period (1937-45), but also later. My aim is to understand which representations São Paulo's Political Police pressed, through the documental series "Dossiers" (that stood between 1940 and 1983) during all its existence. This existence passed through different political conjunctures - Brazilian and international ones: Estado Novo, World War II, Brazil's liberal democratic period (1945-1964), Cold War, military dictatorship (1964-1985). Institutionally, the integralists, after the Ação Integralista Brasileira (AIB) period (1932-1937), began to being repressed and investigated during the Estado Novo. After the Vargas dictatorship fall, they organized the People's Representation Party (PRP), an organization that subsisted until 1965, when several of its members get in the Aliança Renovadora Nacional (ARENA). All this path is portrayed in 120 dossiers in subfamily 24, organized by DOPS. What visions, how the integralist picture as a disorder agent was built by the São Paulo's political police - having as an instrumental theory the history of representations and "logic of suspicion" - are among my aims for this work.
