Abstract

Religious images, for christians who remained loyal to the Roman of Church after the Reformation, did not serve only a didactic purpose the sacred history to the illiterate, and neither were simply works of aesthetic value. For catholics, they held power and were part of religious. Moreover, for these christians, worshipping the sacred objects was not an idolatry cult, as accused the reformers, but part of rituals that had already been consecrated by the Church for a long time. Taking into consideration the different meanings that pictures could hold to catholics, we seek with this research to investigate the issue of iconoclasm in the early Modern Age through the analysis of five European altarpiece paintings 17th century, whose main theme is the attack against sacred images. In order to understand how much the iconoclastic attacks worried Catholic Church members and the faithful, so that all these paintings were commissioned, and what this tells us about the power that images had on Western Christianity in this period, we will examine the sources at two fundamental levels: their formal and thematic elements, and their relationship with the Church - the paintings commissions and the debate about images, their uses and functions in the cult practices of Catholic Christianity of the 16th and 17th centuries.
