Abstract This project aims to research the sociability of workers in Sao Paulo's district of Mooca between the years 1900 and 1920, from a study of its leisure modes and activities. It's guided by the analysis of the leisure experiences of workers in this quarter and the ways in which the multiple leisure activities express elements and values of a class culture and identity in the making. It seeks to understand also, in particular, how occurred and what importance had, in this process of identity formation, the participation of workers in Mooca associations of various types where recreational sociability was developed. Finally, an important goal of this project is to understand how these social modes of this workers that work at the district had a weight, not only in everyday life, but also in the very political and trade union organization of the working class in Sao Paulo.
