Abstract

Introduction. Intrauterine life condition may have a direct or indirect impact on the reproductive future of women. However, to date, no studies are available evaluating the relationship between birth weight and ovarian reserve in the fourth decade of life. The serum levels of anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) are directly related to follicular reserve and indirectly related to the reproductive prognosis of women. Information about the impact of this possible relationship between birth weight and ovarian follicular reserve may offer clinicians several possibilities for better dealing with conception and contraception planning for women throughout their reproductive life. Objectives. Primary Objective: To assess the impact of birth weight and weight for gestational age on ovarian follicular reserve in women older than 30 years. Secondary Objectives: To assess the impact of birth weight, weight for gestational age, longitudinal weight evolution, height and nutritional factors on the fecundity, parity, incidence of abortions and premature deliveries, regularity and characteristics of the menstrual cycles, and symptoms associated with declining ovarian activity. Methodology. Cross-sectional study nested in a cohort. Study population: Women born in 1978 in the municipality of Ribeirão Preto (SP). Study Subgroups: Small for Gestational AGE (SGA), Adequate for Gestational Age (AGA) and Large for Gestational Age (LGA) analyszed in the following groups: A (total number of patients included) and B (group of presumably healthy included patients with no confounding factors regarding reproductive potential). Sample size: 552 women (276 AGA, 138 SGA, and 138 LGA). Primary Outcome: Follicular Reserve estimated on the basis of serum levels of AMH. Secondary Outcomes: Fecundity rate, number of pregnancies, children, abortions and preterm deliveries, menstrual cycle pattern, symptoms related to the menstrual cycle and to the sexual sphere, and serum FSH, estradiol, inhibin B and activin A, B and AB levels
