Abstract

The focus of this study is to understand how both Paulo Emílio Salles Gomes' and Cinema Novo's historical and critical ideas were received and absorbed or rejected and problematized by the Brazilian film criticism. The goal is to analyze this situation in three distinct periods: the years of 1960/1970 (the period of configuration and crystallization of important values); the 1980s, until the end of Embrafilme in 1990; and the ten-year cycle that goes from 1995 (the beginning of Retomada) to 2005. Moreover, it seems necessary to point out some controversies about specific questions related to Brazilian cinema, which had encouraged more constructive critical approaches.
