Abstract

The chain of production from the cottonseed has the cottonseed as it main co-product, which can be used to feed animals, to extract oil for feedings purpose or even biodiesel production. However, the cottonseed presents the gossypol as a limiting factor, a polyphenolic compound whose toxicity in ruminants varies mainly on account of dose and time of ingestion. Although ruminant animals have more tolerance to gossypol intake, there is the possibility of intoxication, and/or transference of its compound or metabolites to livestock that may constitute a rout of human exposure to the gossypol. The intake of cottonseed and gossypol by animals has already been described by the literature, even though, there are not any studies reporting the chronic human exposure to its contaminant through food. On the other hand, some studies have associated the presence of gossypol with different pathologies, from infertility to even the possibility of its contribution to appearance of diseases, whose etiology has not already been entirely elucidated, such as Alzheimer's disease. Thus, the characterization of gossypol´s content that is present in these co-products and the possibility of transference of its contaminants to livestock products like meat or milk, has a major importance to evaluate the safe utilization of this co-product regarding toxicology, not only for animals but also for human being. Due to everything that has been reporting, this study aims to analyze total and free gossypol (add enantiomers) in cottonseed and cottonseed meal meant for feeding ruminant animals and their compounds present in both meat tissues and milk, in order to evaluate the significance of the animal and human exposure to the gossypol.
