Abstract

The examination by images is a resource of great importance for the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases, serving as expert documentation to prove the quality of treatments or identifications of bodies. However, conventional radiographic examination has the potential to cause harmful biological effects, especially in children. So it is important to identify factors that may reduce the exposure of pediatric patients and caregivers to reduce the harmful biological effects of radiation. Further, it is essential that the radiographs show quality images free of technical and processing errors and be appropriately archived. The present study aims to evaluate the quality of the technical processing and maintanance of intraoral radiographs obtained from children. A total of 500 intraoral radiographs obtained at the Clinic of Pediatric Dentistry, from children from 0-12 years old, with standardization of film and equipment used, will be included in the study. Radiographs will be evaluated by three calibrated examiners, and will be classified as acceptable without error, acceptable with errors or unacceptable, according to the following parameters: radiographic technique (framing , angulation and exposure time) or radiographic processing (partial immersion of the film radiographs stained, yellowed, scratched, fingerprints overlay films and contrast radiography). The data will be subjected to statistical analysis, including analysis of the degree of agreement between the examiners (Kappa coefficient) and correlation with the operator (undergraduate student, graduate or Dental Surgeon) , the age (0-3 , 3- 6, 6 - 12 years old), region (anterior/posterior, superior/inferior ) and radiographic technique (periapical, interproximal and anterior occlusal, with or without the use of film holder). The assessment of the quality of radiographic images in children can identify major problems or technical errors resulting in its future prevention, raising the quality radiographic files and reducing radiation doses in Pediatric Dentistry.
