Abstract

This project is part of a wider study whose purpose is to investigate how translation memory systems, particularly Wordfast, influence the choices of translation trainees. This research project aims to analyze this system in the English-to-Portuguese translations of two texts assigned to the students of the Course of Languages with Qualification as Translator at the São Paulo State University during the course of Translation Practice II in the year 2012. Based on a theoretical study of the use of technologies in translation, a total of twelve translations will be analyzed, six of them prepared by three students who used Wordfast and six translations prepared by three students who did not use this tool to complete the work with each of the two source texts. The analysis of these translations will be used to support the considerations made on the possible way the application of tools in the work of the translation trainees may influence their production. The project is justified by the scarcity of research focused on the analysis of the way the translator relates to the tools used during the translation work and the way he/she is affected by them.
