Abstract

Belonging to Characidae family, the yellow tail lambari Astyanax altiparanae, stands out by show reduced size, resistance to the farm manipulation, many reproductions throughout the year, and precocious gonadal maturation at the 4th month of age. These features potentiate its use for farming and production besides accredit it is an important biological model in scientific studies. However, despite the facilities, few data considering the basic aspects of morphology and spermatogenesis in this species are available. This way, the aim of this work is characterize histologically and stereologically the different stages of the germ testicular cells and the spermatogenic cysts they set (germ and Sertoli cells number, by espermatogonial, spermatocytes and spermatids cysts), providing information about the spermatogonial generations, about germ cell loss magnitude during spermatogenic process and Sertoli cells efficiency. For this, adult males individuals of A. altiparanae from Estação de Hidrobiologia Engenheiro Souza Dias (Jupiá) and held in our laboratory facilities (L.I.NEO), had their gonads extracted, sectioned and fragmented, and fixed for their posterior processing following the optic microscope protocols.
