Abstract

Studies of gender and sexuality have woven strong criticism of essentialist conceptions formulated in Western societies, and allowed to analyze the changing character, social, and cultural history both. Thus considered, the purpose of this analysis is to reflect on the interface between the biological and the social, cultural and historical, considering the variations in the compositions of gender and sexuality in Roman society, especially about masculinity. Seek to identify, through Erotic Epigrams of Marcus Valerius Martial, profiles masculinidade presented in the work, permeating the body and sex-affective relationships, as well as traces of social tensions apparent in discursive representation of the author about the places social established to various groups. This research will be developed through reading and analysis of the work of Marcial and contemporary historiographical discussions on the topic.
