Abstract

The utilization of natural products in the diverse areas of pharmaceutical sciences have acquired new techniques that view to take advantages of the native flora in the development of products with aggregated value. Agave sisalana (sisa), a semi-xerophytic plant that belongs to the agave genre, is a wide known species in the northeast of Brasil. The application of A. sisalana is exclusively limited to the obtainment of fiber, not having any other nutritional or pharmaceutical function in the biotechnological point of view, mainly in the solid and liquid residue (sisal juice). Some preliminary studies with this residue have indicated a possibility of achieving pharmaceutical excipients, antioxidant agents, hormones and prebiotics. Due to these scientific applications, this project aims to obtain brute polysaccharides and purified inulin from the bole and the solid and liquid residues resulting from the defibriation process of the agave leaf. An ample characterization of the structural and physicochemical point of view of these substances with modern techniques is also proposed as well as the evaluation of its antioxidants and prebiotic activity. Therefore, the result of the studies proposed in this project may take a new direction for the utilization of A. sisalana with the possible patent request and with further application prospects of products obtained from this species in the pharmaceutical area.
