Abstract

Family Potamotrygonidae is composed by four genus and 28 species. Potamotrygon Garman, 1877, with 23 species, Plesiotrygon Rosa, Castello & Thorson, 1987, and Heliotrygon Carvalho & Lovejoy, 2011, both have two species, and Paratrygon Duméril, 1865, with only one species, P. aiereba (Müller & Henle, 1841). Distributed in two great basins of South America, Amazon and Orinoco, P. aiereba presents morphological differences between their populations which points to a species complex. Until the moment, we recognize five possible groups of Paratrygon which possess morphological distinctions of P. aiereba. These groups occurs in Tocantins, Araguaia, Xingu rivers (Amazon basin) and two groups from rivers of upper Orinoco basin. To complement these analysis and the taxonomic revision of the genus, it must be necessary to visit international collections, principally in the Europe, where most of the types of the family Potamotrygonidae are deposited. Therefore is proposed here the request of the Bolsa Estágio de Pesquisa no Exterior (BEPE) to a temporary stage of studies in the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London, England, where morphological studies to Potamotrygonidae specimens with supervision of Dr. Ralf Britz will be done. Beside this, seven other european collections with contains potamotrygonid types and specimens could be visited. Some of them have already been contacted as: Museum für Naturkunde (ZMB, Berlin), Zoologisches Museum (ZMH, Hamburg), Naturhistorisches Museum (NHMW, Wien), Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNHN, Paris).
