Abstract

The study aims to compare the growth process of homicide rates in violent four districts of São Paulo to be chosen with the coordinators of the project. The goal is to identify the main causes of intense fluctuation in these rates using longitudinal and qualitative methods. The analysis seeks to understand the context in which choices are made and how the process is generating homicidal choices. The research seeks understanding of (1) the context of violent conflicts; (2) a profile of the protagonists, (3) alternative paths of action in murder cases, (4) role of the institutions in the violent neighborhood (5) rhetoric that supports violence, (6) values that tolerate murder and (7) dynamics of groups practicing homicides. Doctoral thesis on the case of São Paulo, which I defended last year (MANSO, 2012), attempted to show how, since the late 1960s, murders by members of law enforcement institution were decisive in shaping the context of neighborhood violence and the homicidal choices of its residents. I would analyze the trajectory of homicidal choices in diferent districts in the city and compare them. From the information collected in field research, using the principles of the Situational Action Theory (SAT), comparison between the different contexts can be made by qualitative comparative analysis and Boolean algebra, which has been widely used in political science.
