Etiologies of ischemic stroke in young adults at the Hospital of the University of São Paulo

Abstract

It is estimated that up to 14% of all strokes occur in less than 45 years age group, however there is a lack of data on the subject, especially in developing countries . Objective: To analyze the profile of patients with ischemic stroke in young patients admitted to the neurology ward of the Hospital das Clinicas, University of São Paulo (HC-FMUSP). Method: Study of medical records, laboratory tests and imaging of patients aged 15 to 45 years admitted with a diagnosis of ischemic stroke to the Neuroglogy ward at HC-FMUSP, from January 2003 to December 2011. We plan to include 250 patients. Demographic characteristics and risk factors for vascular disease will be evaluated. Etiologies of IS will be classified based on the analysis of clinical features and laboratory tests according to criteria from the "Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment". Descriptive statistical analysis will be performed.
