Abstract The aim of this study is to analyze four critical essays that Manoel Antonio Álvares de Azevedo (1831 - 1852) wrote about authors from the Romantic and other literary periods, highlighting the deep relationship he had with the journalism of his time: "George Sand: Aldo o rimador"; "Alfredo de Musset: Jacques Rolla"; "Lucano" e "Literatura e civilização em Portugal: fase heroica e fase negra". Taking Azevedo, in the first instance, as being a "critic-poet" we intend to outline the possible methodological procedures of which he makes use to build his critical thinking and, in addition to building a picture of his theoretical references, to discern the way in which he uses such references in his particular contribution to the Brazilian Romantic project. Through an intensive process of intertextuality, which results in the revision of the literary tradition, Azevedo relies on a number of critical judgments issued by both foreign and domestic authors. The way the essayist connects to those opinions and, most often, how he refutes them, allows us to evaluate his attitude toward the literary press of the period, one of the major disseminators of Romantic poetry. | |
