The objective of the Project is to elucidate neural mechanisms that process autonomic information associated with compensatory cardiovascular, repiratory and behavioral (thirst and sodium appetite) adjustments to dehydration and underlying arterial hypertension. The study will focus on a model circuit involving a triangle formed by nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), rostro-ventrolateral medullary region (RVL) and lateral parabrachial nucleus (NPBL) and their connections with forebrain regions such as lamina terminalis and nucleus accumbens. To reach this aim the project combines diverse techniques such as: intraencephalic chemical injections; viral transfection; immunohistochemistry; electrophysiology; behavioral, cardiovascular and respiratory recordings. The expectation is to answer questions such as: 1. What is the pathway activated by osmorrecception to inhibit and activate sodium intake? 2. What mechanisms forebrain circuits use to process information coming from NPBL linked to the control of sodium intake? 3. In what mechanisms linking hindbrain to forebrain does angiotensin II act to control arterial pressure? 4. How is cardiorrespiratory transduction performed in the NTS, RVL or NPBL? (AU)
