Abstract

Adventure Tourism sector, related to tourism movements derived from the practice of non-competitive recreational adventure activities, has attracted increasing attention due to its great potential of promoting economic growth and development for many Brazilian regions and its local communities, besides being a great attraction to international tourists. In order to qualify and stimulate this activity, Brazilian Tourism Department, in association with ABNT (Technical Standards Brazilian Association), promoted the creation of a variety of technical standards, which regulate the sector. These rules also apply to the terminology used, providing definitions of important concepts. The standardization of terms used in Adventure Tourism in Brazil contributes to make efficient the communication among organizations, entrepreneurs, professionals and tourists. In order to provide them with tools to interchange information, national and internationally, the aim of this research project is to search for the equivalents in English of a set of terms relating to adventure activities, contributing to the creation of a trilingual glossary (Portuguese-English-Spanish) of terms used in Adventure Tourism. The research involves the domains of Terminology, Bilingual Terminology, Corpus Linguistics and Adventure Tourism. In relation to theoretical fundamentals, we follow Socioterminology (FAULSTICH, 2006; GAUDIN, 1993) and Terminology Communicative Theory (CABRÉ, 1999) concepts. The search for terms, definitions, contexts and equivalents will be based on works on Adventure Tourism originally written in English and using the software Word Smith Tools.
