Abstract

Known as the fifth largest hydrographic basin in the world and the second largest in the american continent, the La Plata basin has a large hydroelectric potential with several plants placed on its rivers as Itaipú (the largest operating hydroelectric facility in terms of annual energy generation). The La Plata Basin is located on of most densely populated regions in South America, sustaining domestic consumption and agricultural activities. This region is subject to action of many Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCS) throughout the year. The MCSs can cause flood owing their capability to generate great amounts of precipitation, resulting in economic impacts in the basin. These mesoscale systems may be influenced by biomass burning aerosols from Amazon and Central Brazil during austral spring. These particles can be transported via Low Level Jet (LLJ) from the biomass burning region to the La Plata Basin. The project proposed here addresses to investigate the interaction between aerosols and MCSs over the La Plata Basin through observational data assimilation in the Brazilian development on the Regional Modeling System (BRAMS) by using the Maximum Likelihood Ensemble Filter (MLEF) algorithm. Using this methodology, it is expected to improve the understanding of microphysical mechanisms related to aerosol and MCS interactions and propose adjustments in microphysical parameterization of BRAMS.
