Abstract

Connectivity, or the exchange of individuals among marine populations, is a central topic in marine ecology. For most benthic marine species with complex life cycles, this exchange occurs primarily during the pelagic larval stage. For these species, the dispersion distance is directly related with the time in which the larvae stay in the pelagic environment that may be used to model or estimate the dispersion potential and predict connectivity levels between populations. On the other hand, physical oceanographic processes and the larval behavior may act as barriers, altering the gene flow between populations. Dispersal potential alone is an imperfect predictor of population connectivity, as the genetic structure of marine populations often contradicts that expected from life history strategies. On this study, we intend to use two species of syllids as model to investigate the genetic and geographic structures of lineages occurring throughout Brazilian coast and to test the hypothesis in which taxa with brooding (Sphaerosyllis densopapillata) larval phase is missed, are more geographically structured once these taxa has a supposed lower dispersive potential, whereas is also expected that taxa with indirect development (Syllis pseudoarmillaris) would be less structured geographically due the presence of larvae, with an increased dispersive potential. With this, we will have a better understanding of evolutionary processes of cladogenesis and species diversification in the coastal marine fauna from Brazil.
