Abstract The compound LaNiO3 (LNO), lanthanum nickelate, is an interesting material due to its extensive and promising applications as bottom electrodes in various devices. LaNiO3 undergoes a rhomobohedral to cubic phase transition at high temperatures, and displays a metallic-like behavior and Pauli paramagnetism in a wide range of temperature as well. Recently a great interest in the fabrication of nanostructured polycristaline thin films as LNO arose, and this motivation has been leading to discovery of some properties not yet well understood, such as an increase in conductivity, which is ideal for applications as bottom electrode devices and the indication of superconductivity in heterostructures. On the other hand, barium titanate (BaTiO3) has interesting properties such as piezoelectricity and high value of dielectric constant , therefore it can be used as a dielectric in the fabrication of dielectric / ferroelectric memories.A detailed study of this system LaNiO3 and LaNiO3/ BaTiO3 thin films deposited by an accurate and reliable technique is of paramount importance and relevance to a better understanding of their physical and chemical properties, and such understanding is essential if we are intending to use this kind of material in future applications such as the construction of photoluminescent materials and FeRAM memories. This work aims to study the deposition of thin films of LaNiO3 and LaNiO3 / BaTiO3 system manufactured trough the technique known as Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD), on different substrates (SrTiO3, MgO, LaAlO3 and SrLaAlO4).These films will be characterized with x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and electrical resistivity measurements at low temperatures , since the data obtained by these techniques combined can provide a better understanding of the physical properties of this strongly correlated system.
