Abstract

The Brazilian modernization and urbanization brought many changes on the population lifestyle. The Household Budget Survey (2009) found in people over the age of 10 years old, a high consumption of processed foods and its relationship with greater intakes of energy, sugar, sodium and saturated fat. This dietary pattern is related with the increase of childhood obesity and with the development of chronic diseases. According to the Second National Conference on Food Security and Nutrition (2004), school canteens have been identified as an important educational environment to encourage consumption of healthy foods. However, researches have shown that foods sold in school canteens do not have healthy nutritional characteristics. Therefore, the Ministry of Health and Education have developed,'' The 10 Steps for Promoting Healthy Eating in Schools'', a document that aims to promote health at the school environment and proposes the restriction of unhealthy food. In the state of São Paulo was established the Order of 03.23.2005 laying down rules for the operation of school canteens and informing foods allowed to sell. The purpose of this research is to evaluate products sold at school canteens of Ribeirão Preto, in accordance with the existing regulatory documents. Five elementary schools from in each system will be selected by simple random draw. To collect data, a questionnaire with a wide list of foods and beverages will be used in order to verify the adequacy to the documents. (AU)
