Abstract

Dioxins, furans and polychlorinated biphenyls are toxic pollutants for human health including risks of cancer incidence , neurodevelopmental effects, dermal lesions, chloracne. These compounds are persistent organic pollutants that can be transported to long distances from the emission source and they are bioaccumulated in ecosystems. Objective: To determine the equivalent toxicity of the atmosphere of the city of São Paulo due to the measurement of dioxins, furans and polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in the air. Method: Exposure of passive collectors of toxic pollutants in urban, industrial and background areas in São Paulo associated with active collectors, with an exposure time of 4 months for 8 months. The samples, after collection in the field, will be subjected to pre-treatment systems using Soxhlet extraction and purification (acid silica, alumina and activated carbon columns). The analyzes will be carried out in the gas chromatograph, high-resolution (HRGC) coupled to a mass detector for high resolution (HRMS). Quantification of the 17 species most toxic of the dioxins, furans and dl-PCB 12 will be determined in terms of toxicity equivalent (TEQ), individual and total. The evaluation of these compounds found in the atmosphere may provide evidence about sources of pollution. This research will be conducted in partnership with Cetesb (Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo), where will be carried out the analyzes of the laboratory.
