Abstract

We propose to investigate biosynthetic gene clusters of guanidine alkaloids found in a Brazilian specimen of the sponge Monanchora arbuscula. These alkaloids constitute unique chemical entities, which seem to be polyketide-derived, for which a guanidine-derived amino acid can be envisaged as a starting biosynthetic group, possibly derived from arginine. The biosynthetic origin of marine sponge guanidine alkaloids have not yet been investigated. Considering that such alkaloids have an occurrence as very complex mixtures, the investigation of the biosynthetic gene clusters coding for guanidine alkaloids biosynthesis in marine sponges may constitute a considerable challenge to be achieved.
