Abstract

The proposed study is linked to the Project Becoming aided communicators: Aided language skills in children aged 5-15 years - a multi-national investigation under the coordination of Prof. Stephen von Tetzchner, PhD. This study analyzes the production Task Six that could enhance and complement Beata Batorowicz and Kristine Stadskleiv's studies. The researchers are analyzing the same production task from different perspectives in Norway and Canada. Therefore, the objectives of the study are: 1. Analyze the utterances used by the aided communicators and the naturally speaking children to guide the communication partner to construct physical models; 2. Analyze the dialogue and strategies used by the communication partners to understand and follow the instructions given by the aided communicators and the naturally speaking comparison children. The participants were a) eight children and adolescents using communication aids, b) a comparison group of eight naturally speaking children and adolescents without disabilities, c) eight mothers of aided communicators and d) eight mothers of the children in the comparison group. All participants lived in Brazil. Procedures for organizing the material: 1. The Children and youth aided communicators were assessed with: Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) (ELIASSON et al, 2006), Gross motor ability was classified according to the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) (PALISANO et al., 1997), CFCF Communication Functioning Classification system (CFCS) (HIDECKER et al., 2011), Peabody Picture Vocabulary Scale (DUNN, L. M. et al, 2004) and The Viking Speech Scale (PENNINGTON et al, 2010); 2. The participants were videotaped when doing the tasks; 3. The recordings were transcribed, following the notational system proposed by von Tetzchner & Basil (2011); 4. The dialogues were transcribed in their native Brazilian Portuguese and translated into English; 5. The results will be analyzed and written as an article; 6. The article will be submitted to an international peer-reviewed journal. The doctorate student has completed steps 1, 2, 3 and 4. The period required for the fellowship program is related to the analysis of the material. (AU)
