Abstract

This research project is about the middle sectors participation in São Paulo urbanization between the years 1890-1914. Specifically, the research aims how the middle sectors activity construction was in the city of São Paulo, contributing to the territorial expansion of the city, analyzing, for this, the district of Vila Mariana. By building activity referring to housing construction both for residence and for renting. The period covered is from the establishment of the Republic, when it began transformations that enabled the expansion of the layers and the urban middle sectors, until First World War, when observing changes in economic relations and a decrease in building activity. The housing shortage has increased the housing market and social actors of the extracts average seen in the construction of rental homes the possibility of expanding wealth. We will do an analysis of the reasons the middle sectors to build, houses for residence, also rental housing as profitable business and as increase their earnings. The Republic has caused changes in the political, institutional structure of government and society's behavior. There was reorganization in relations of power and domination, opening up space in society for different sectors to organize themselves occupied with other forms of performance. In this process of changing relationships are parts of the urban middle groups that have participated in the formation of the city, although by means yet to unravel. Housing construction contributed to the extension and densification of neighborhoods. In these dynamic, the middle sectors in XX century beginning operated the urban space transforming it in the place where they lived. (AU)
