Abstract

Due to the rapid expansion of micro -organisms resistant to antibiotics and the limited development of new antimicrobial agents, infections by Gram - negative bacteria are becoming a challenge for health professionals and a threat to international public health. The aim of this study is to evaluate the synergistic effect of conventional antibiotics associated with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the control strains of Acinetobacter baumannii. To perform this study, clinical strains of A. baumannii from clinical laboratories in São José dos Campos / SP will be obtained . All clinical strains will be subjected to tests to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration antibiotic imipenem and meropenem following the CLSI standards. Sensitive and antibiotic-resistant strains will be evaluated for in vitro susceptibility to antimicrobial photodynamic therapy. Also, will be tested the effects of conventional antibiotics, PDT and combined antibiotics and PDT in experimental infections in G. mellonella induced by clinical isolates of A. baumannii resistant to antibiotic therapy. The results of therapy for experimental infection will be evaluated by the survival curve of the larvae of G. mellonella. Data from in vitro tests will be submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test. The data on the survival of G. mellonella curve will be analyzed by using the log -rank method. In all tests, it is assumed significance level of 5 % .
