Abstract

Estuarine and coastal areas are affected by different sources of anthropic influences, derived of harbor activities and industrial and rural effluents. Two mangrove areas from two estuarine ecossystem: Vitória Bay and Santa Cruz in the Espírito Santo State, Brazil, with different levels of metal and metalloid contaminations will be evaluated in order to identify the metal origin and its transference through the trophic chain to a food chain top-predator (the fish Centropomus parallelus). Simultaneously, metal and metalloid concentrations in gills, muscles, livers and kidneys of C. parallelus, in addition to exposure and effect biomarkers and potential morphological alterations in these organs will be determined. Metal and metalloid concentrations will be analyzed in both abiotic (sediment, interstitial water and bottom water) and biotic (plancton and shrimps samples) matrices to determinate the biomagnification of these pollutants in the trophic chain and its origin will be determined through isotopic correlations (carbon, nitrogen and lead). Biochemical biomarkers will be utilized in the evaluation of the effects in fish and the stereological techniques will be utilized in the morphological analysis. Multivariate statistic will be applied to integrate the parameters to evaluate the environmental quality and the biotic effect as a tool to the environmental management. (AU)
