Abstract

The most general objective of this research is to contribute to the analysis of the relations between Greek tragedian and psychoanalysis, considering as object of study a common term to both fields. More specifically, we intend to examine the correspondences between the Greek term daímon in the "Theban trilogy" by Sophocles (Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone), taking into account the analysis of eminent Hellenists (JP. Vernant, P. Vidal - Naquet, ER Dodds, B. Knox, C. Segal, T. Vieira, O. Serra, among others) and the notion of destiny in psychoanalysis (from formulations of S. Freud and J. Lacan); this examination aims to analyse the continuities and discontinuities between the development process in the "Theban Trilogy" and the development process in an analysis (linkage established insistently by Freud and Lacan). With this perspective in mind, we intend to analyze the roots of psychoanalysis in classical culture (Roudinesco), as well as the current presence of tragedy (Vernant) that still manifests itself in contemporary culture. In short, it is a study on the foundation of psychoanalysis in tragedy. In this sense, the research is divided into three areas of work: (I) study of the daímon and the destiny of Oedipus; (II) analysis of the concept of destiny in psychoanalysis (starting from "Beyond the pleasure principle" of Freud and "Seminar VII - the ethics of psychoanalysis" of Lacan); (III) establishment of correlations (and non-correlation) between these two fields, based on a survey of the critical fortune in question.
