Erosive remineralization and demineralization of enamel considering different times of salivary action and intraoral devices: in situ study

Abstract

The protective potential of saliva has been described in literature as an important factor that influences the pathogenesis of dental erosion. The aim of this study is to evaluate the remineralizing effect in situ of saliva on early lesions of erosion and their protective capacity in relation to the erosive enamel demineralization, through the use of palatal and mandibular intraoral devices at different times of evaluation (30 min, 1h, 2h and 12h). This study will be divided in two subprojects, one with ten volunteers and other with the sample to be determined after a pilot study. In subproject I, after evaluating the initial surface hardness, the blocks will be demineralized enamel in vitro (0.05 M citric acid for 2 min), selected and randomly divided into 2 devices (palatal and mandibular therefore be used two specimens per device and the analysis of time will be made in the same block). During phase in situ, the volunteers will be instructed to use the devices (palatal and mandibular) for a maximum period of 12 hours, so that after each period of predetermined time (30 min, 1h, 2h, and 12h), the device is removed from the oral cavity to remove the enamel blocks and immediate evaluation of surface hardness (surface hardness after remineralization). In subproject II, the enamel blocks, selected by Initial Surface Hardness (initial SMH) are randomly distributed in 8 groups, with two blocks for each group (according to the type of dental appliances and the time of pellicle formation acquired). In stage in situ, If it is possible to use the devices (palatal and mandibular) at the same time, four crossover phases will be conducted with an interval of 2 days between them, and each phase will be evaluated in a group in a study, in which vary the time of permanence in situ enamel blocks (30 min, 1h, 2h, and 12h). After removing the enamel blocks of the devices, they will be submitted to erosive initial demineralization (0.05 M citric acid for 2 min), and then the surface hardness will be evaluated.In both subprojects, the results will be submitted to appropriate statistical analysis, considering the factors studied.
