Abstract

The main objective of this project involves the synthesis and characterization of new complex and advanced materials, mainly focusing on the following systems: i) New superconducting materials based on FeAs. ii) Nanowires of heavy-fermion systems and related compounds. Based on the previous experience of the proposed host group in the synthesis of single crystals of the pure and doped BaFe2As2 compound, we intend to optimize the methods to produce single crystals of other families such as, for example, AFe2As2 (with A = Sr, Ca) and (Ba, Li)Fe2As2. Within this context, the main goal is to contribute to the microscopic understanding of the complex interplay between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity found in these systems. On the other hand, in order to investigate the role of low-dimensionality in heavy-fermion systems and related compounds, we intend to synthesize single crystal nanowires of the RIn3 and RMIn5 series (M = Rh, Ir or Co; R = rare earth). To study the electronic, magnetic, transport and thermodynamical properties of these systems, we will carry out experiments of powder X-ray diffraction, resistivity, magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity. Subsequently, selected samples will be studied by specific techniques, such as electron spin resonance (ESR) and, when possible/necessary, X-ray absorption and fluorescence (XANES, EXAFS, EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These studies will be mainly performed in the Laboratório de Propriedades Óticas e Magnéticas de Sólidos (GPOMS) of the UNICAMP and, when necessary, in collaboration with researchers of the LNLS.
