Abstract

Several species from Brazilian subtropical grassland (Campo) and Brazilian savanna (Cerrado) are endemic and have thickened belowground organs with dormant meristems (buds). The plant bud bank allows vegetative regeneration and survival under unfavorable environment conditions and disturbance. In Cerrado and Campo burning events are frequent and the capacity to resprout is an important adaptation. Many herbs and shrubs of Aldama genera have specialized underground system and occur in these ecosystems. In plants from Central-Europe that have similar underground systems and can develop new sprout are grouped in the CLO-PLA3 database that is an interesting tool for studies about regeneration of vegetation after disturbance, population dynamics and risk assessment in endangered species. Considering that Aldama species have important biological and pharmacological potential and Brazilian subtropical grassland and savanna is rapidly devastated, the knowledge about biodiversity is one of the steps to start appropriate conservation managements. The overall goal of this proposal is to create a database similar to CLO-PLA3 for Aldama species to facilitate and to help futures studies. (AU)
