Abstract

Titanium and titanium alloys are widely used for the production of dental implants due to their good mechanical properties, excellent biological behavior and good corrosion resistance. However, some implant failures are still reported in the literature. This way, it is essential to develop new titanium surfaces with improved properties to achieve a more efficient behavior in the intra-oral environment. With anodization technique, it is possible to control the final properties of the surface, through the creation of a titanium oxide film with improved biological properties, higher corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical properties. This proposal aims the surface modification of titanium samples through anodization technique, in order to achieve corrosion resistant surfaces, in addition to excellent osteogenic and antimicrobial properties. Surface modification will pay special attention to the incorporation of bioactive elements in the oxide film. Anodized samples will be fully characterized in terms of surface morphology, crystalline structure, chemical composition and corrosion behavior in biological environment.
