Abstract

In Castile, in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, laws and rules were created by the secular and religious authorities to distinguish Christian women from the exterior signs, in particular, by clothing. From 1351, starts to become noticeable in legislative records that were the legacies, increased concern of Castilian authorities with certain excesses in dress for women, which resulted in complaints and petitions in the courts in order to limit excessive and improper use of certain materials and adornments to avoid confusion between the different groups of women and, consequently, harm and damages. Whereas this concern to reconcile the external appearance with the Christian virtues, we intend to interrogate the various restrictions on display of wealth and in return, the release of use of certain materials, with the aim of assessing the elements that contributed to build an image of woman from its outer appearance. Our hypothesis is that, despite the differences in social background, common prescriptions were launched on all women and an effort was made to avoid the moral deviation which has already begun in the garments. At the end of the fifteenth century, the establishment of a new standard of dress, with the emergence and spread of certain costumes, as the executioner, and a mode of dress proper of the Castilians, led to a greater concern regarding the excesses and increased legislative activity that came to guide and serve as a model for subsequent prescriptions.
