Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus affects a significant portion of the world population; even though large investments in the research and treatment areas are made annually, it is estimated that in 2030 the number of people with diabetes will reach 366 million. Estimates indicate there will be 11 million diabetics in Brazil by 2030. Type 1 diabetes results from an autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta cells, which sets the clinical condition of hyperglycemia associated with hypoinsulinemia. The advanced stages of the disease are associated with metabolic complications which lead to dysfunction and cell loss. In the nervous system, with diabetes, there is progressive lost of cerebral functions with alterations in the cellular mechanisms of memory and learning. These alterations are closely related to changes in bioelectric pattern of the nervous system cells, with deviations of the resting potential of these cells being affected; to knowledge, action potentials in neurons and electrotonic potentials in glial cells. The present research project proposes to assess and integrate alterations resulting from Diabetes mellitus in metabolic patterns and in the protons currents in microglia. (AU)
