Abstract

This research proposition - included in the thematic project "The Transatlantic Circulation of Printed Matter: the globalization of culture in the 19th century" (FAPESP) - intends to dimension the impact of the French drama during the early years of the Brazilian romantic theatre. Therefore, we will try to reconstruct the circulation, representation and the critical reception of this foreign genre in Rio de Janeiro's main stages, among the 1830 and 1860 decades. A better understanding of the French drama repertoire represented in Empire's Capital stages, and the value that the genre had obtained with the public and critic, will allow us to study the appropriation of its textual and scenic elements by two playwrights productions, that wrote and had plays staged during the period: Martins Pena and the French immigrant Luis Antonio Burgain. The study is based, essentially, on primary sources: representation advertisements, theatrical critic and the audience's messages published by the Rio de Janeiro daily newspapers; and the censorial judgment of the Brazilian Dramatic Conservatory. The research hypothesis suggests that the drama of the French romanticism had a key role in the constitution of the Brazilian romantic theatre and that Martins Pena and Burgain had dialogued with this genre to compose their dramas. Using the cultural history of the spectacles as the methodological approach, and the comparative study of dramatic texts, this research tries to understand how the French repertoire was appropriated in Brazilian Court during the first half of the 19th century, by the action of many different "passeurs culturels" (playwrights, theatrical companies, translators, theatrical magazines). Three complementary approaches will be articulated: the first one will consider the art of the spectacles in the stages of Rio de Janeiro and the transatlantic circulation of dramatic texts; the second will consider the discussion about theatrical theories among the critics and the third will consider the staged plays of the first romantic playwrights, Martins Pena and Burgain.
