Abstract

The objective of this doctorate research project is to study the internationalization of China in Latin American countries, from the perspective of International Political Economy (IPE). The research question structuring this project is "how is the internationalization of China in Latin America conditioned by the role played by the USA in what not so long ago was the so-called 'American Backyard'?" IPE offers an optimal theoretical ground to apply both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Thus, this Project is based on two lines of research: (a) a general line, which will consider Latin America as its unit of analysis, where an econometric study will be used to find general trends among its compounding States, using Spatial Regression Models to address the concept of distance which is inherent to the discipline of International Relations; (b) A qualitative approach to deepen the study of the results obtained from the econometric models. Even though the Research Project is considering Latin America as its unit if analysis, the author will deepen the results obtained through this general picture into two pivotal countries to overcome limitations of quantitative methodology, namely Brazil and Mexico.
