Abstract

Introduction: interventions for smoking cessation during pregnancy are highly effective in preserving life and reducing damage to health. The highest rates of smoking cessation in women occur in pregnancy; however, only one third maintain abstinence after childbirth. Prevention of relapse in this period is important and widely discussed in the literature. Due to the high prevalence of tobacco use and related harm to the fetus / newborn and nursing mothers is essential that actions aimed at smoking cessation are directed to the gestational period and remain after delivery. Objective: to evaluate the influence of intervention based on cognitive behavioral therapy supplemented by brief videos specifically designed for pregnant smokers in the rate of smoking cessation during pregnancy and postpartum. Materials and Methods: 138 pregnant smokers will first be evaluated and separated into two groups, control and intervention. At the first prenatal consultation, all pregnant women receive a counseling session standardized individually with specific content related to smoking during pregnancy. The intervention group will receive up to six counseling sessions to be held in groups of up to ten pregnant women during the pregnancy period. The women in both groups will receive written material with general information about tobacco use and related consequences of this habit in pregnancy. All pregnant women attending to the group sessions already provided during routine health units will watch videos with content related to tobacco use and its consequences for the pregnancy and the fetus / newborn. Will use an instrument developed for the study to record data on smoking status, values of carbon monoxide in expired air, body weight, degree of dependence, stage of motivation, symptoms of anxiety and depression, perceived stress and craving. Expected results: the goal is to change the phase of motivation and the smoking status of pregnant smokers through cognitive behavioral therapy, whose effectiveness in the general population is well established in the literature and / or of videos and printed material content specifically for this population and collaborate to quitting smoking.
