Abstract

White MTA has different applications in Endodontics, due to its satisfactory biological properties. However, white MTA causes discoloration of dental structures, an undesirable consequence especially in aesthetical areas. The destabilization of bismuth oxide molecule has been pointed as the cause of discoloration. The aim of the study is to evaluate the addition of aluminium chloride and aluminium fluoride in white MTA to inhibit the destabilization of bismuth oxide and the dental discoloration. The proportions of 0.5; 1.0 and 3.0% of the substances will be added, by weigh, in white MTA. The chemical characterization, radiopacity, setting time, solubility, pH, calcium and fluoride release, dental discoloration and biocompatibility will be evaluated. White MTA will be the control. The cements will be mixed using 1 g of powder to 0.3 mL of distilled water. Chemical characterization will be evaluated using SEM, EDS and XRD. Radiopacity and setting time will be determined according to ISO 6876/2001. Volumetric solubility will be tested using micro-CT. The pH and ion release will be evaluated after 3, 24 hours and 28 days. Dental discoloration analysis will be performed before cement insertion, immediately after insertion and after 28, 60, 90 and 180 days. The biocompatibility will be evaluated with the implantation of cements in subcutaneous tissue of rats. The results will be submitted to normality test of D'Agostino and Pearson to select the most adequate statistical test (p < 0.05). (AU)
