Abstract

Following advances in genomics and proteomics, new fields of "omics" are emerging. The metabolomics course complements studies in the area of genomics and proteomics, however great physical chemistry metabolome diversity leads to a subdivision of metabolites. Thus, lipidomics is currently emerging as a discipline in the interface of biochemistry of lipids, technology and medicine. This expansion of the field of lipidomics can be attributed to analytical advances, particularly in the development of new techniques of mass spectrometry for the characterization and quantification of the different species of lipids present in a lipidome. Lipids play important roles in cell composition among them membrane composition, energy supply and signal transduction, and therefore can be used as biomarkers in metabolic diseases, infectious diseases and degenerative diseases. The aim of this study is the determination of lipid biomarkers present the etiological agents of giardiasis, meningitis and tuberculosis, as well as lipid biomarkers involved in the progression and treatment of meningitis by mass spectrometry and development of diagnostic methods for giardiasis, meningitis and tuberculosis directly from the feaces, cerebrospinal fluid and sputum, respectively. The development of diagnostic methods based on mass spectrometry can provide a rapid and sensitive diagnosis, allowing rapid patient care and reducing the transmission of these diseases (AU)
